Advocate of the Year, Mary
Embleton, Cascade Harvest Coalition, Seattle
This certificate is
given to Mary Embleton in appreciation of her steady, passionate
advocacy for sustainable agriculture in Washington. As director of the
Cascade Harvest Coalition, Mary has spent the last eight years building
awareness of regional farm issues, promoting farmland preservation;
enhancing community food security and working collaboratively to
improve the local food system. Not only is Mary making a difference,
but she is doing so with style, competence, humor and a good measure of
farm pride. Washington’s thriving local food system would not
be
what it is today without Mary’ dedication and hard work.
Tilth
Producers deeply thanks Mary Embleton for giving her heart and soul to
sustainable agriculture.

Farmer of the Year,
Hilario Alvarez, Alvarez Organic Farms, Mabton
This
certificate is
given to Hilario Alvarez and his family, who have set an example of
dedication to their agricultural enterprise. Hilario made the journey
from farm worker to farm manager, now caring for his own 75-acre
organic farm, selling 300 vegetable varieties at 14 farmers markets in
Washington. Hilario’s ability to identify new business
strategies, his love of the soil and his responsiveness to customers
has always put him on the progressive edge of farm and marketing
practices. With a focus on farm profitability, Hilario chose good land,
certified organic in 1992, grows vegetables of exceptional quality,
breeds varieties unique to Washington, such as peanuts, okra, tomatoes
and peppers, and developed his family’s signature value-added
pepper wreaths and ropes. Hilario’s focus on direct market
sales
demonstrates his commitment to farmers markets and the development of
new sales outlets in Washington. The Alvarez Farm supports many other
families and serves as an inspiration to us all of excellent farm
practice and the true meaning of family farming.
