JOB POSTING

POSITION: Market Garden Manager, Killarney Farm (Certified Organic Produce)

WHEN: May-Sept, 2017

WHAT: To assist owners in operation of successful, well-established 6- acre market garden. Responsibilities will include overseeing irrigation and management of green manure crops as well as directing and working with interns in planting, cultivating and harvesting crops primarily for three weekly markets. Training available. Participation in markets if desired. Must be hard-working, energetic, cheerful, quiet and health-minded. Should also have some mechanical aptitude and experience in growing produce. This would be a good opportunity for a couple to build expertise in growing for market.

WHERE: Killarney Farm is a certified organic, off-grid homestead located an hour outside of Coeur d’Alene, ID.  Surrounded by National Forest and nestled into the hills above Killarney Lake and the Coeur d’Alene River valley, Killarney Farm originated in 1986 when avid organic gardeners and homesteaders.  Ellen Scriven and Paul Smith joined their efforts to begin market gardening. Certified Organic since 1991 [the first year of Idaho’s program], they have been growing vegetables, fruits, flowers, nuts and herbs primarily for local farmers’ markets and a roadside stand with occasional sales to restaurants and stores in the Coeur d’Alene area.  Founding members of the Kootenai County Farmers’ Market Association, Ellen has served on the board of directors for many years. In addition to the 6+ acre produce enterprise, Killarney Farm is host to a flock of laying hens, a few hives of bees and a small herd of goats and sheep.  Each season Killarney Farm offers several internship positions to aspiring market gardeners. Check out our listings on the ATTRA, WWOOF and Local Harvest websites.

DISPENSATION: Monetary compensation [DOE] as well as rustic accommodation, partial board and farm products.
