Dates: March 30, 2018 through October 1, 2018 (dates are flexible)

The Smithshyre is an actually organic homestead with livestock including Narragansett turkeys, sheep and dairy goats.

We are currently seeking 1 or 2 interns for the 2018 Season!  We need self starter(s) who can finish a job.  Someone who doesn’t mind physical labor, there are no tractors on The Shyre.

The ideal candidate would be someone with vegetable production experience who would like to learn more about keeping livestock and running a homestead.  Do you have a season of vegetable production under your belt?  Are you ready to help manage the vegetable production?  We have 34, 75 foot long raised beds, one large high tunnel and one small high tunnel.  We could profit share with the correct candidate.

Someone who is familiar with and is inspired by, the works of Mark Shepard, John Seymour, Jean-Martin Fortier and Masanobu Fukuoka, if not we will start a reading list.

Would you like to have more animal keeping experience? Here at The Shyre we keep lots of livestock, all heritage breeds. We keep Dwarf Nigerian dairy goats, Finn sheep.  Plus we have breeding Turkeys and many laying hens.

Would you like to learn how to milk goats and trim hoofs.  We use natural herbal medicine worming to treat our animals, another skill you can learn here at “The Shyre”.

The best part of keeping animals is baby animals, help with kidding. We have several goats freshening in February and March. This is just the tip of the iceberg we can teach you so much about keeping livestock, you will love it.

so cute!

so cute!

Additionally, we have dreams of a permaculture forest farm that includes Chestnuts, Apples, Beaked Hazelnuts, cane berries, vines, mushrooms, and herbs.  Be ready to help with that project, which is underway.  Help us mimic an oak savanna, by planting and maintaining, our woody crops.

We would like to expand our vegetable production and continue to implement our low till system.  We would consider profit sharing with the right hard working individual.   We learn 10 to 100 things a day, join us!

Please no children or dogs!

We have orchards that would make good camping and a small travel trailer we could make available if you prefer.

We can only offer a $25 a week salary with room and board.* This is all contingent upon everyone being like minded. Our motto is “Be the Change You Seek” We seek a clean food system built on local, seasonal farms.
