SAgE Sammamish Valley Student Farm in Woodinville, WA is offering experiential skill-based education in Sustainable Agriculture. Interns have the opportunity to participate in varying aspects of a working organic farm. The farm is located within a vibrant, diverse agricultural community, 19 miles from downtown Seattle. Woodinville is located in the beautiful agricultural Sammamish Valley with proximity to wineries, the Redhook Brewery, the Sammamish River bike path and the 21 Acres Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living. Interns will be exposed to a wide range of farms, crops and growing techniques.

New and beginning farmers, urban and community gardeners, farm educators and students with a desire to deepen their understanding of sustainable farming systems in an intensive and focused learning environment are encouraged to apply.

Some of the topics we cover are:

  • Small-scale livestock management (chickens, sheep, hogs)
  • Solar electric fence and solar cooling
  • Biodiesel tractor and tiller use
  • Soil preparation, seed starting, and planting
  • Install and operate irrigation
  • Scale appropriate equipment
  • Season extension
  • Integrated pest management
  • Harvesting, packing & marketing produce
  • CSA, Farm-to-Campus, Food Hub sales
  • Community outreach

Duration:
May 15 – August 15 OR June 15 – September 1

Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship. However, college credit can be arranged.

Requirements:
No prior farm experience or knowledge is necessary; only a desire to learn and a proactive attitude. Internships are designed to accommodate individual student learning goals. Work is based at the SAgE Samammish Valley Student Farm, 19 miles from downtown Seattle. Internship participants are required to travel to and from the farm independently and must be able lift up to 35 pounds on a daily basis, as well as perform other physical tasks related to farming and farm operations, work outdoors in all types of weather, and able to work as a team or independently. Minimum age: 18. Must have drivers license and own transportation.

Schedule:
Minimum 16 hours per week/2 days per week. (Days of the week are flexible.)
