Dates: April 1, 2016 through October 31, 2016 (dates are flexible)

At Good Earth Centre, we are employing and experimenting with natural farming techniques, like those promoted by Masanobu Fukuoka author of The One Straw Revolution. We grow produce, herbs and flowers on a leased acre of land on a beautiful 160 acre working farm on San Juan Island. Everything is done by hand using the practice of organic no-till combined with extensive cover cropping. This year we are selling through a small CSA. In 2013 we completed a Western SARE research project that compared our organic no-till techniques with conventional tillage when direct seeding vegetables. We are the only commercial farm in the region to be employing continuous organic no-till with a wide variety of vegetable crops. Education is very important to our operation, and we have held a number of workshops on Organic No-Till and and other hands-on techniques for sustainable farming. Good Earth is owned and run by Gary & Amy – a husband and wife team who met at Vandana Shiva’s Navdanya in India, fell in love and realized they had the same farming philosophies.

Interns will do 32 hours of practical farm work per week, with guidance from us. They will participate in every aspect of running of a small-scale organic vegetable farm. Work will include the whole range of tasks from planning to harvest, as well as marketing and sales if you are interested in those aspects. You will be required to do a lot of manual work, as we do everything by hand. Tasks include: bed preparation, scything, transplanting, direct seeding, weeding, watering (drip irrigation), raising starts, managing compost, cover-cropping, harvesting, use of natural soil amendments. Instruction and learning is hands-on and generally takes place in the field, but we also create spaces for sharing related books or films and discussing the wider issues of agriculture at lunch or occasionally in the evenings, after a communal dinner or round a bonfire. Time outside of the 32 hours is managed by yourself, including yoga classes if you wish.
