Island Meadow is a vegetable and flower farm just West of Seattle, on Vashon Island, in the heart of Puget Sound. We cultivate approximately 2 acres of produce and flowers on three leased parcels, all located within five minute’s drive of one another. We use organic and ecological methods for food production, relying on crop rotations, cover cropping, interplanting, compost and manure for fertility and botanical health. Our emphasis is to raise delicious food for sale to our community – which is done directly from a decades-old, self-service farmstand onsite, at Vashon’s Saturday Farmers Market, and to select restaurant and catering accounts.

This is as much an opportunity to learn about eating a farm-based diet as it is an adventure working hands-on in the small-farm environment. Seasonal farm produce is provided and our interns are encouraged to harvest from the farm. Island Meadow is managed by a young couple; we employ a second, part-time intern and several regular volunteers.

Monthly stipend is $400 and accomodation is provided in a small, clean trailer with outdoor shower and composting toilet.

Island Meadow Farm participates in Vashon’s vibrant CRAFT program, where interns are encouraged to visit other farms for a monthly discussion and work-party during the growing season. We also ferment our own cabbage in a nearbly commercial kitchen for sale as raw sauerkraut. Fancy salad mix, heirloom dried beans and mixed-flower bouquets are other specialties that set us apart from nearby farms.

Our poultry are pastured among old fruit and nut trees on this longtime agricultural property. We rotate the chickens regularly to maintain their access to fresh grass.
