Tahoma Farms in Orting, WA is seeking up to 4 interns from May to October.  Interns are paid minimum wage for 35 hours/week, plus farm chores and occasional weekend responsibilities.  Interns will have access to produce from the farm, a discount on produce from our sister company (Terra Organics) and farm fresh eggs.  On farm housing is available for $500/month (individual rooms in comfortable intern farmhouse).

Tahoma Farms is a 40-acre certified organic vegetable farm located on the fertile banks of the Puyallup River.  Our farm has been in production since 2009, and is part of a 100-acre conservation easement held by the PCC Farmland Trust that ensures our farm will always be a farm in organic production.  We grow a wide variety of mostly cool climate vegetables and berries.  Three-quarters of what we produce goes directly to our sister company, Terra Organics (www.terra-organics.com) for distribution to homes and businesses in the Puget Sound region.  We also sell certain crops to local wholesale companies.

No previous farm experience is required of interns, but we do look for life experience that has prepared interns for the rigorous challenges that daily farm life offers.  Must be physically fit and able to lift 40+ pounds, focus on repetitive tasks for multiple hours at a time, work independently and in a group.  Ideal applicants will be curious, willing to ask questions, do what it takes to get the job done, passionate and easy going.  Conversational Spanish is a plus.

We are looking for interns who have a strong interest in farming as a career.  We have a list of topics that will be covered throughout the farm season including but not limited to: seed starting, soil health, irrigation, starting and managing a small business, developing a farm plan, etc.  We also arrange tours with neighboring farms, as we believe there are many different models for a successful farm.  Additionally, interns will be provided with a small plot of land to start their own garden for the season, if desired.

Interns will participate in greenhouse seeding and watering, harvesting vegetables, transplanting, weeding, delivering produce, washing and packing orders, office management, farm chores and various small farm projects.  We have a regular farm crew of up to 10 employees during the peak farming season, and interns will at times work independently of this crew, and at other times work with the crew.  Besides having a strong interest in farming, the ideal candidates will love good food (preparing and eating it!), have good interpersonal skills, be able to work quickly and at a pace set by the farm crew, be detail oriented and able to follow directions.  Opportunities for year-round, leadership positions are available for the right person completing the internship.
