Whidbey Island Organic Farm Internship

Bur Oak Acres, LLC is a small family run diversified organic produce farm located on Whidbey Island, WA, about 20 miles north of Seattle.  The B.O.A. operation consists of an acre in field cultivation, six greenhouses, a commercial kitchen, and an open-year-round self-service farm stand.  We market our produce and value-added products at the farm stand, local restaurants, and at the Bayview Farmers’ Market.  B.O.A. is a member of Certified Naturally Grown, a national organization of organic farmers.

For the 2012 season, March through October, we are looking to take on two interns. Housing is provided on the farm with a separate trailer for each, interns may “harvest” from all the produce and value-added products, and they receive a stipend of $300/month.  The work load varies with the season, but usually is around 50 hours for a five day week which always includes participation in the Saturday Farmers’ Market. Once established into the routine at B.O.A., each intern will responsible for baking one morning and on another, preparing our unpasteurized fruit and vegetable juices.  At some time during their stay at B.O.A., the interns get a week of paid vacation.

We are looking for individuals with a positive work ethic paired with a sense of humor; someone strong enough to handle the physical demands of farming and sensitive enough to deal with customer relations at the farm stand and farmers’ market.  Farming experience is not as important as attitude. The owner of B.O.A. is an experienced academic with a background in ecology and botany, so there will be ample opportunity for the interns to get “on-the-job-training.”
