Sweet Earth: Lessons From the Land
A special series airs on KUOW, 94.9 FM from Seattle on September 15 – 19,
during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
Soaring gasoline prices, climate change, health consciousness. They're all
factors in the growing movement to eat locally. It's a great slogan, but is it
possible to eat locally in the Central Puget Sound region? What kinds of
challenges face our local farmers? What can state and local government do to
help? From King County's efforts to protect farmlands from encroaching
development, to programs that try to find aspiring farmers to make that land
productive, you'll hear about public and private initiatives to boost farming.
You'll also learn how direct marketing can take farmers beyond the traditional
farmers markets. The shows will explore the bond between farmers and the land they
steward.
Reported by Ruby de Luna, Phyllis Fletcher, Liz Jones, Anna King, Amy Radil
and Marcie Sillman. Edited by Marcie Sillman. Production assistance by Mwende
Hahesy and DaeDae Williams. Airs on KUOW, September 15 – 19, during Morning
Edition and All Things Considered.
Tilth Producers' own Anne Schwartz appears in stories running on Wednesday the 17th
and Friday the 19th on Morning Edition.
KUOW wants to involve their online listeners in this. There's a
discussion area on the KUOW website where folks are weighing in on the question
"How much are you willing to pay for fresh, local produce?" You can join that
discussion HERE
Also, they are launching a new interactive, on-line Q&A program that will go along
with the series. Tilth farmers Anne Schwartz and Andrew Stout are answering
questions sent in by listeners
