2016 26.3 Get Ready for Keynote Speaker Michael Phillips

Glean Holistic Orchard Ideas at November Conference

We are excited to announce that farmer, writer and orchardist Michael Phillips will be our keynote speaker at this year’s Tilth Conference. Michael believes that an organic orchard can be a part of every diversified farm and homestead.

At Lost Nation Orchard, Michael and his family run a diversified mountain farm in northern New Hampshire. Three acres of young trees supply a community of shareholders with both dessert and juice fruit. They also grow medicinal herbs and make herbal preparations for a New England-wide market. Michael’s first book, The Apple Grower: A Guide for the Organic Orchardist, sets the stage for growing healthy fruit and changed the conversation about healthy orcharding.

His latest work, The Holistic Orchard: Tree Fruits and Berries the Biological
Way
, has been recognized by the American Horticultural Society as its garden book of the year for 2012, addressing topics such as permaculture, native pollinators, understory planting, cover crops, biodiversity and the newest research on natural solutions to pests and diseases. Michael teamed up with his wife Nancy as well to write The Herbalist’s Way: The Art and Practice of Healing with Plant Medicines. We look forward to his perspective on holistic orchard management and an integrated ecological approach to farming.
