Public Gardens

Human immigrants have carried seeds of their familiar, useful plants with them wherever they have gone, introducing them in to plant communities often very different from their original communities. This mingling of gene pools has caused the extinction of many plant species, and the near extinction of countless others. In recognition of the importance of species diversity, arboreta, botanical gardens and related horticultural research centers round the world have done a tremendous amount of work preserving plant species for display, research and planting.

The Pacific Northwest is well-endowed with arboreta and botanical gardens. Gardening columnist Ed Hume's book Northwest Gardens to Visit lists about 30 public plantings of interest for the Northwest.

If you are so lucky as to live near one of these arboreta, take the time to visit there and learn from direct observation about the growing habits of different plants. Most of the gardens are planned for beauty, so they make a fine outing for the whole family.

Public support is needed to see that the arboreta receive the financial support they need to carry out their work.
