Work/Learn Opportunity, Small Farm on San Juan Island

Heritage Farm is a 39 acre farm nestled on beautiful San Juan Island. We have pastured laying hens and a market vegetable garden. Our hens are moved rotationally to fresh pasture and fed all organic feed. We are not yet certified but we have always used all organic practices to grow a variety of vegetables. We are making our own compost and also using Biochar and organic minerals to nourish our soil. We sell our eggs and produce at the Saturday Farmer’s Market and from our own farm stand.

Job Description
We are looking for one full time apprentice to work beside and assist the farm garden manager from April through Sept during the 2017 growing season.We will be starting plants in the greenhouse, transplanting into raised beds and weeding and harvesting vegetables.You will help with one farmer’s market per week. There will be interesting projects like brewing compost tea, charging Biochar and making compost. 40 hours per week are expected. There will be a $50.00 per week food stipend.

Educational opportunities
You will learn about the care of the soil as well as how to grow a variety of vegetables from seed to harvest. All of our farming practices are geared toward improving soil tilth, promoting beneficial organisms and sequestering carbon.We are experimenting with creating no till beds. There will be one hour of formal instruction per week and reading material will be provided on organic farming techniques and philosophies.

Housing and environment
Housing on the farm will be provided. You will use a shared kitchen and bathroom in the main barn. You will be responsible for cooking most of your own meals. Farm eggs and farm vegetables will be provided. The farm is within a few miles several parks, day hikes, and beautiful beaches. We are a ten minute drive from the town of Friday Harbor.

No farming experience is required. That said, farm work can be physically challenging at times. Please only apply if you are genuinely interested in farming and can work independently for periods of time.
