Description of Work: The Greenbank Farm Training Center on beautiful Whidbey Island, WA is full for 2010. Please apply in November for the 2011 season. for more info, read on. From March 1 until the end of October, farmer-trainees will learn how to start and operate a small-scale organic farm through classes, personal study, field trips, and working on the 50-member Greenbank Farm CSA. Topics of study will include soil and crop management, greenhouse propagation, composting, infrastructure development, seed-saving, business planning, recordkeeping, and much more. The program will average 31 hours per week and participants will receive a monthly stipend of $400 as well as assistance in finding temporary housing through the Whidbey Island WISH Foundation. The Training Center will be selecting new trainees on a rolling admission throughout November, December and January. Description of Work: Jones Creek Farms is a diverse farm and the intern will learn many things, just a few of which are: The details of orchard management from planting new trees to caring for established ones. We make all of our trees ourselves so grafting propagation will be taught. Planting, care and harvesting of tomatoes plus the management of the greenhouse environment. Care of a small amount of animals: chickens, geese, cow etc. Intern will learn techniques to allow certified organic standards to fit within a sustainable approach to farming. Details: The vegetable production manager(s) will work with restaurant staff to develop a crop plan and budget, and then take responsibility for planting, weeding, pruning, soil amendment, and harvest. The garden space is about one acre, and includes fully automated drip-line irrigation and a 20x40 greenhouse with heat pads, watering systems, raised beds, and tables. The berry orchard is well-established and contains raspberries, blueberries, several varieties of blackberries (aprox ½ acre) and requires pruning, fertilizing, and weeding between the bushes. There is also an 80-tree apple, pear, cherry, and plum orchard that will require harvesting and fall pruning. This position includes housing shared with other interns, with kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and internet, or we can help you find housing on the island. There is also a small stipend and an end-of-season bonus depending on the success of the crops. This position is open immediately (April 2009).
