Description of Work: Five Acre Farm is dedicated to small scale, community based agriculture. Our organic produce reaches the local community through our roadside stand and three farmers markets here on Whidbey Island as well as the cities of Everett and Seattle. We grow a wide range of gourmet quality mixed-produce ranging from the tried-and-true standards to more exotic heirloom varieties. We will take "field trips" to other farming operations and events on the island and in other locations in Western Washington to learn new techniques and different methods of agriculture. Also, you will be able to shape your own learning experience and follow your own interests as much as possible in the framework of our operation. Personal garden space will be provided for you to experiment with on your own. You will learn to build/use greenhouses, hoophouses, and field tunnels to produce early harvests and extend your growing season. You will take part in every aspect of operating a small farm from cultivating, planting, weeding, harvesting, marketing/selling, irrigating, and caring for produce, and a small orchard. If interested you will also learn the basics of tractor maintenance/operation. By the end of this season you will know how a small farm operates.

Greenbank Farm Training Center, Greenbank, WA, 98253

Description of Work: The Greenbank Farm Training Center on beautiful Whidbey Island, WA is full for 2010. Please apply in November for the 2011 season. for more info, read on. From March 1 until the end of October, farmer-trainees will learn how to start and operate a small-scale organic farm through classes, personal study, field trips, and working on the 50-member Greenbank Farm CSA. Topics of study will include soil and crop management, greenhouse propagation, composting, infrastructure development, seed-saving, business planning, recordkeeping, and much more. The program will average 31 hours per week and participants will receive a monthly stipend of $400 as well as assistance in finding temporary housing through the Whidbey Island WISH Foundation. The Training Center will be selecting new trainees on a rolling admission throughout November, December and January. Details: The vegetable production manager(s) will work with restaurant staff to develop a crop plan and budget, and then take responsibility for planting, weeding, pruning, soil amendment, and harvest. The garden space is about one acre, and includes fully automated drip-line irrigation and a 20x40 greenhouse with heat pads, watering systems, raised beds, and tables. The berry orchard is well-established and contains raspberries, blueberries, several varieties of blackberries (aprox ½ acre) and requires pruning, fertilizing, and weeding between the bushes. There is also an 80-tree apple, pear, cherry, and plum orchard that will require harvesting and fall pruning. This position includes housing shared with other interns, with kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and internet, or we can help you find housing on the island. There is also a small stipend and an end-of-season bonus depending on the success of the crops. This position is open immediately (April 2009). Description of Work: A small, mixed row crop farm, growing organically over 100+ veggies. Many heirlooms and unique crops. Learn all aspects of operation, from seeding, planting, weeding, harvest, marketing at 3 local farmer's market. Use small-scale (ancient), tractors and other equipment. Learn how to grow for specialty restaurants and how to build into grocery store sales. I will share what I know and we can learn even more together as I transition from small, part-time farmer to slightly less small, full-time farmer! Every season is a new adventure!

Description of Work: We are a Grade A goat and sheep dairy and licensed cheese kitchen. Our cheesemaker has 15 years of experience in livestock farming and cheesemaking. We raise hogs in classic "tractors". We'll raise our own chickens, plus we raise lamb and chevon. An intern will work in all aspects, shovel work, planting, animal care including bottle feeding, milking, probably slaughtering, plus rub shoulders with cheese-making, will certainly build temporary and permanent fences and shelters, lots of serious fence building, irrigation installation and operation, intensive rotational grazing, weeding, general, mindless clean-up, cooking with fresh food, marketing. Expect to get stronger and more mechanically-minded, to appreciate the place and eat Real Good. We also live in a diverse community of farming operations and people working for a sustainable world and have much to share in the way of materials and resources.
