Keynote: Organic and Sustainable: The Common Ground
Dr. E. Ann Clark, Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph, Ontario
8:45 am - 10:00 am
Organic. Sustainable. What’s in a name? Quite a lot, as a matter of fact. Many would argue that organic is, by definition, sustainable. But then what is meant by the term sustainable? Can organic actually be unsustainable? Can farming that ignores organic principles be truly sustainable? Disentangling the two terms will help to clarify what is needed to redesign the agri-food system for a post-oil future.
Redefining organic from the encompassing, value-based vision of the founders to what it is today—audited compliance with largely scale-neutral production and processing standards—has opened a widening chasm between organic and sustainability. Re-integrating traditional values, through the local food, slow food, fair trade and other co-operative movements, will enhance sustainability by bringing organic back to its roots.
Dr. Clark coordinates the Organic Agriculture major at the University of Guelph, the first and only one of its kind in Canada. With degrees from the University of California at Davis and Iowa State University, her career has focused on management of production systems, emphasizing grass farming and organic agriculture. She has written extensively on organic agriculture and teaches several organic courses as well as crop ecology, land reclamation and grassland management. The keynote address will be simultaneously translated into Spanish.
