Dates: June 2017 through Nov 2017 (dates are flexible)

August Farm is a small-scale, female owned, pasture based, diversified livestock and flower farm.  We are located along the banks of the Chehalis River in Independence Valley, nestled in a vibrant farming community, 30 miles south of Olympia, Washington. We raise chickens, pigs, and sheep. All of our animals graze on pasture and are fed certified organic  and locally grown feed.  Our animals are humanely-raised outdoors and either processed on farm or at our processing facility and sold directly to customers. We grow an acre of specialty cut flowers. We sell our flowers direct, wholesale and through weddings and events.

We are seeking an intern for 2017 farming season to help with the day to day operations of the farm and monthly chicken slaughter.  The internship is part time (approximately 80-100 hours a month).  This position is unpaid, but we offer work trade in the form of on-site housing (travel trailer with kitchen) and access to bathroom and laundry in the main house and wifi, as well as meat and eggs from the farm.  There is also the possibility of paid part time work on a neighboring organic vegetable farm.

Potential interns must be hard-working, self motivated, and have good communication skills and physical health.  A positive sense of humor is also welcome, as well as a love of hard work and swimming in the river after a long day.  No prior farming experience is necessary, although it will be considered during the application process.

You will work closely with the two female farmer/owners in the field.  Daily chores will include animal chores, pasture rotation, and helping with the flowers production: transplanting, weeding and harvesting flowers.  Our intern will have the opportunity to learn all aspects of running a pastured poultry and pork operation, interspecies rotational grazing, lamb and pork butchery, flower farming and floral design.

Independence Valley is a magical place to spend a growing season.
