8th Street Greens is seeking Farm Crew, Apprentice welcome for 2017.

Job Description:  8th Street Greens is seeking full time and part time farm workers for the 2017 season. The goal being another successful growing and selling season!  Also, 2nd and 3rd year employment, with assistant manager position could be yours for  2018 and 2019. . . . .

Dates: a.s.a.p. For phone meeting and decision making. Work months p/t March and April, f/t May – beginning November. We are getting the early crops going.

Job Description:   General farm labor:  tractor operation (ideal, not necessary), plant, hoe, weed, mulch, remay, harvest, rinse, pack, keep a good pace,  have stamina, work in heat or cold, cleanliness in rinse and pack station, label boxes correctly,  fun loving, team player, be on time, references, etc. . . .             also:  potential to work at farmers market and mini-grocery store Okanogan Farmstand (my other business).

Season: Okanogan, North Central Washington. Dry desert sage brush steppe, irrigation water, chance of frost until Mid-May. Chance of frost mid-Sept.  Snow on the ground now. Awesome skiing year, both nordic and downhill. Warm springs. Hot days begin in May on thru October. Most nights cool down nicely.  Nice lakes for swimming. Yes, we use re-may, have high tunnels and use shade cloth.  First salad planting: early March, weather depending. Last salad planting: mid September. Transplant cool season starts: mid-April Transplant warm season starts: mid-May Some succession transplanting.  Bi-weekly direct sow greens successions.

Operations: 3 acres of field space. grow lots of greens, some heads and bunching greens, some berries, peas, green beans, summer squash, cukes, tomatoes, peppers, melon, onions and garlic, etc. Fairly complete and diverse growing list. We serve Okanogan and Methow Valleys retail accounts, tiny CSA, a single small Farmers Market, and a downtown Farmstand. We have a brand new building for rinsing, packing, etc!!!  Be a first to work in it!  Irrigate with micro spinners and drip tape. Paper mulch. Alfalfa mulch. Trellising. Occultation. Hoeing. Strict organic practices.

General Weekly Schedule: 6 a.m. Or 7 a.m. Until 2 or 3 p.m or 4 or so, depending on day and crew.  Co-Manager 5 days/week.  Other crew some p/t some f/t. Greens harvests (3-4 people) and rinsing takes 2 days,  April thru October.  Late June – Oct m-w-f picking of summer squash, cukes, berries, etc (2 people). CSA pack and produce deliveries 1/2 day (1 – 2 people). Friday market harvest/pack and Farmers Market on Saturday.  I also sell coffee and will be baking, preserving, etc.

Hiring Goals:   Good  field and packing crew.  Self-motivated.  Assistant manager.  3-year commitment would be great!  I am in full swing with my Okanogan Farmstand and budding commercial kitchen.  I am no longer full time field hand/ farm manager.  I would also like to hang out with my kids more. I want to see 8th Street Greens continue to thrive. Part of a farm thriving is a good crew and managers.  I have 2 return employees who are very experienced and great to work with.

Housing: various potentials we can discuss.

This Okanogan country is huge.  Friends and activities are widespread, thus having a car is highly recommended.  We are an urban farm in a rural community.  Okanogan is 4–5 hours from Seattle, 3-4 hours from Bellingham, 2.5 hours from Spokane, 35 minutes to the Methow Valley and an hour from Canada.
