Agricultural Research Technologist 1 This position is located at the Washington State University Mount Vernon NW Agriculture Research and Extension Center located in

Mount Vernon, WA  Monthly Salary: $2370.00   12 months, full-time, bargaining unit position.

This position is responsible for supporting WSU small fruit research at the Mt. Vernon station and elsewhere in the state; including managing research plantings, collecting data, assisting with greenhouse and laboratory experiments, and leading temporary field workers.  Under supervision, manage research plantings at NWREC-Mt Vernon and at offsite locations, including other research Centers and berry growers’ fields.  Participate in the irrigation, pruning, weeding and harvesting of fruit.  Under direct instruction, correctly and safely apply fertilizer and pesticides in field and greenhouse.  Coordinate equipment maintenance for vehicles and farm equipment.  Perform timely data collection from experimental plots.  Collect data of harvested fruit, including weighing and measuring, and assessing quality of fruit.  Under direct supervisor, make modifications to data collection procedures as necessary.  Enter data using Excel and SAS while maintaining accurate records; including computing summary statistics.  Lead temporary workers in field work during planting and harvesting; including directing their day to day work.  Under direct supervision conduct laboratory and greenhouse experiments.  Assist with set-up, maintenance greenhouse experiments.  Operate and calibrate research-scale field, laboratory, and greenhouse equipment.  Order and keep inventory of field and laboratory supplies.  Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum/Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in the applied, biological, chemical, physical or agri­cultural sciences; OR four years of full-time experience as a Technical Farm Laborer, OR equivalent education/experience.   Ability to operate a variety of farm equipment.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook required.
Ability to have or obtain at the time of hire a valid unrestricted driver’s license.  Ability to have or obtain at the time of hire a valid Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License.

Preferred Qualifications:

A BS/BA in Horticulture or allied field, or with three years’ experience in small fruit industry or research.   Working knowledge of conversational Spanish is desirable.
