Open Position: Assistant Farm Manager

The Seattle Urban Farm Company specializes in designing, installing and maintaining small  farms and edible landscapes for residents, schools, and businesses in the Puget Sound region.

We are currently accepting applications for the Assistant Farm Manager position at our Urban Fringe Farm project. The position requires daily collaboration to manage all aspects of a 4-acre organically certified mixed-vegetable farm in Woodinville, WA. Although you will be working under the direction of the Farm Manager, you will be responsible for many operating procedures. The Assistant Farm Manager is responsible to ensure tillage, planting, cultivation, irrigation, and harvest occur on schedule and to a high standard of quality.

Due to the seasonal nature of vegetable production, Assistant Farm Manager must be willing and able to work long and irregular hours during peak season as the needs of the crops dictate. Applicants must be available on weekends when necessary and should not plan extended vacation time during the primary growing season.

Working directly with the Farm Manager. Tasks include:

Developing seed and material purchase orders.

  • Communicating with clients on a weekly basis.
  • Maintaining farm equipment in working order.
  • Managing additional farm staff.
  • Maintaining adequate inventory of seeds, plants and supplies.

Working independently and with a small staff to oversee the day-to-day operations of the farm. Tasks include:

  • Completing primary and secondary tillage so adequate planting space is available for transplanting and seeding.
  • Accomplishing transplanting and seeding on schedule.
  • Ensuring irrigation, cultivation, and cultural care are accomplished in a timely fashion.
  • Ensuring harvesting and pack out are accomplished on time.
  • Ensuring produce deliveries happen on time.
  • Assessing harvest and maintaining close communications with clients in order to adjust planting schedule to meet demand.
  • Managing cover crops to maintain soil fertility.
  • Maintaining accurate farm records for organic certification.
  • Maintaining/mowing unplanted areas around production field.

Required Skills

  • 2+ years of experience on a diversified vegetable farm.
  • Appropriate tractor skills to accomplish tasks above.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems for vegetable production.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work long hours in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery and power tools confidently and safely.
  • Ability to use Excel and other recordkeeping software to maintain accurate farm records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and clients.
  • Ability to effectively lead a crew to accomplish time sensitive tasks.
  • Applicant must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Positive attitude and enthusiasm for sustainable food production.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with record keeping for organic certification.
  • Experience with managing systems and documentation for GAP compliance.
  • Mechanical equipment repair and maintenance skills.
  • Experience with greenhouse construction.
  • Experience with nursery plant propagation and care.
