2007-C5 Grape Production Performance and Marketing Potential in the Pacific Northwest

Grape Production Performance and Marketing Potential in the Pacific Northwest
Olmstead, Fallahi

Mercy Olmstead of WSU and Essie Fallahi of the University of Idaho join forces for this grape production workshop covering the basics of     starting a vineyard, selecting varieties and potential marketing avenues for grapes. Many new American Viticultural Appellations (AVAs) are being considered in Washington, and numerous acres are already being planted with different grape varieties, including Italian, Iberian, and  Portuguese types. Choosing a site is the most important aspect of a successful vineyard, and matching grape varieties to specific sites requires detailed knowledge of local climatic factors and soils. Mercy Olstead will talk about growing degree day calculations, where to get climactic data, availability of clean nursery stock, and site selection.  Essie Fallahi will discuss varietal information on table and wine grapes and the marketing potential of grapes in the Northwest.  Learn how to start your vineyard based on sound evaluation of site, varieties and market potential.
